Safety Barrier Case Study | Woolworths Distribution Centre

Safety barriers, bollards and safe pedestrian walkways are critical not only to protect property and staff, but also provide a real, tangible competitive advantage by reducing down-time due to vehicle accidents.

Woolworth’s 100 million dollar, 38,000 square metre new distribution centre in Palmerston North has been hailed as an amazing achievement, especially considering the last year of construction has been done under pandemic conditions.

After a stringent process from Woolworths, Astrolift were awarded the safety barrier supply contract, in conjunction with installation from 360 Development Ltd.

Managing Director Lee Cheneler from 360 Development explains how the whole project team worked through specification changes, additional requirements and uncertain work conditions to deliver a fantastic result for the customer and community.

For this project it was evident from the start that the client needed to have a full and comprehensive traffic management system in place to protect personnel and assets, feeling secure in the knowledge they'd be protected from day one of operations starting.  Additionally with a project at this scale, any delays in finishing the project equates to real, tangible revenue loss for the customer.

The challenge set for Astrolift and 360 Development would best be exampled in the sheer volume and variety of product to be supplied & installed within strict time perimeters, all the while maintaining progress as the variations come at you thick and fast.

A great example Astrolift's benefit as a supplier, was the requirement of a double barrier rail with a unique chain-link fence to protect pedestrians from high-stacked pallets. Instead of waiting to have custom built products shipped in from overseas, Astrolift were able to custom manufacture to the unique specifications at their local Northland fabrication workshop. This considerably sped up a major section of work which would have otherwise had the potential to delay the project entirely.

Having a professional team working as off-site support and constant open lines of communication between Astrolift, 360 and the client creates an environment where we're able to move quickly on the ground and bring new changes into the fold without disruption.

The result is a very happy client sporting a traffic management system second to none. The attention to detail, transparency and quality of the installation is always our North Star.

The real buzz is not only delivering reliable and safe workplace, but creating a smile for the customer when they cast their eyes over the gigantic scope of the project...  that's the icing on the cake!
